Serious book proposals (II): the genre

In professional and academic book publishing, much depends on the genre of the book. Monographs, textbooks, how-to books, reference books, crossover books: how the books are priced, marketed, and sold will vary between genres.

If, as the author, the genre of the book is unclear to you, do not submit the proposal. Rethink it: decide which genre it is and tailor the proposal accordingly,

And if the genre is clear to you, avoid assuming it will be to everyone else. Make it explicit.

You could do so in the first sentence of the proposal. For example: “This is a proposal for a scholarly monograph”.
